The Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) Technique

By Dr. Ernest Simo

2.0 Uniform and non-uniform Quantization
The Quantization Process

The quantization process defines the various amplitude levels that are used to represent the samples.

In order to represent more evenly the various dynamic ranges of the speech signal, these methods are based in non-uniform quantization of speech according to a Logarithmic, rather than linear scale.

In conventional digital telephony systems, two non-uniform quantization strategies are generally used. They are referred to as Mu-Law and A-law respectively.
