Background and Introduction to PN Codes
By Dr. Ernest Simo

5.0 How are PN Codes generated?

PN sequences, also referred to as PN codes, can be generated with a n-stage Linear Shift Register where:
  • Appropriate taps are connected to a Modulo 2 adder;

  • A seed pattern (other than an all-zeros state) is continuously shifted through the Linear Shift Register, triggered by a clock.
The output of the Modulo 2 adder is used to drive the input of the shift register.
