AUTH and RAND
Definition: AUTH sets the authentication mode. If a mobile is to include standard authentication data in its access messages, the base station sets AUTH to binary 01. If not, AUTH is set to binary 00. All other 2-bit words are reserved.
RAND is the random challenge value. If the AUTH field is set to binary 01, the base station sets RAND to the random value to be used by the mobiles during the authentication process. If AUTH is set to any other value, the base station may ignore the RAND data field.
AUTH and RAND
Example: AUTH is a 2-bit word and RAND is either omitted or it is a 32-bit binary word. When RAND is a 32-bit word it is conveyed to the mobile in the access parameters message. RAND, as a 32-bit random word, is used in the authentication process which is used to validate mobile station registrations, originations, and terminations.
