In order to represent more evenly the various dynamic ranges of the speech signal, these methods are based in non-uniform quantization of speech according to a Logarithmic, rather than linear scale. In conventional digital telephony systems, two non-uniform quantization strategies are generally used. They are referred to as Mu-Law and A-law respectively.
