PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS: AN INTRODUCTION
By Dr. Ernest Simo

6.0 CONCLUSIONS

Truly, there is nothing wrong with the wired networks. Their capacity, response time, quality and reliability can be optimized to serve almost all traditional requirements, as well as those demanded by the computer-driven information age, such as ISDN and HDTV. Their only constraint is the physical wire.

During the 1990's and beyond, the telecommunications user requires all the attractive features of wired network, plus the convenience of not being physically limited by a network architecture and topology.

The modern user is in search of a body-coupled communication interface that would allow voice and data transactions irrespective of time and space. This requirement of a person-to-person connectivity rather than a location-based connectivity are some of the drivers behind the new resurgence in wireless communications.

However, to be truly effective, wireless networks must be a complement to, not separate from, wired networks and their intelligent switching and signalling centers.
